This article contains projects for paper crafters of all levels.
This year, the culmination of the Mardi Gras celebration, Fat Tuesday, lands on February 8. Fat Tuesday, also known as Shrove Tuesday, is the day before Ash Wednesday, which in the Christian tradition is the beginning of Lent, a period of fasting and penitence. New Orleans is known to for its outrageous celebrations in observance of this holiday. Festivities include wearing beautiful costumes, feasting, and bacchanalian revelries.
Traditionally, Fat Tuesday was the day to clean out your stores of meat and dairy in order to feast before Lent begins. Growing up, my mom would make pancakes for dinner on Fat Tuesday. As an adult, I tend to cook a better-than-average dinner on Fat Tuesday—a sort of “last meal” before Lent begins. This year, I thought a party would be a fun twist to the tradition. Here are some crafty ideas for making it special.
Start off searching the Web for party ideas and supplies. The best site I found was at http://www.mardigrasday.com/; it’s full of recipes and ideas for parties, including resources for ordering or making your own King Cake! Of course, the invitation will set the tone for your party. The traditional Mardi Gras colors are purple, green and gold. I used art glitters in these colors to make all of the projects look luxurious and special. Don’t forget to check out your favorite stamp and paper companies’ catalogs for appropriately themed images.
One of the most popular images associated with Mardi Gras is the stick mask. Using paper maché masks and wooden dowels, you can create party decorations or additions to your costume. How about inviting your fellow paper crafters over for a slice of cake and a mask-making party!
